President William Ruto has congratulated Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed after he was re-elected to serve a second five-year term.
Abiy was re-appointed by Ethiopia’s newly constituted House of Peoples’ Representatives on Monday, October 5, during the first regular session of the seventh parliamentary term. He subsequently took the oath of office, formally beginning his new term.
In his message, Ruto described Abiy’s renewed mandate as a vote of confidence in his leadership and vision for Ethiopia.
“Congratulations my brother, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, on your re-election to lead Ethiopia for a second term,” Ruto said.
The Kenyan President wished Abiy success as he leads Ethiopia through its next phase of development and transformation.
Ruto also expressed Kenya’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Ethiopia, saying Nairobi looks forward to working closely with Addis Ababa on shared interests.
He said the cooperation would seek to benefit the people of both countries, the wider East African region and the international community.
Abiy’s re-election follows Ethiopia’s June 1 general election, after which the newly elected House of Peoples’ Representatives convened to begin the process of forming the federal government. The ruling Prosperity Party secured a parliamentary majority.
The new administration is expected to focus on economic transformation, national development and regional engagement during Abiy’s second five-year term.
