A 23-year-old man accused of killing an 18-year-old secondary school student in Molo has been detained for 21 days as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.
Walter Kipkoech appeared before Molo Resident Magistrate Christine Mugo on Tuesday following the death of Joy Wangui, who was allegedly killed at her parents’ home in Moto village on Sunday afternoon.
Police sought more time to complete investigations, including DNA analysis of evidence recovered from the scene, a postmortem examination and a mental assessment of the suspect.
Investigators also told the court that releasing Kipkoech could place him at risk, citing heightened public anger following the incident.
Kipkoech did not oppose the application, prompting the court to grant the 21-day detention order. He is expected to return to court on October 27, 2026, when police will provide an update on the investigations.
The suspect was arrested on Monday evening at a hideout in Lagwenda village, Kuresoi North, after allegedly fleeing the area following the incident.
According to police, Kipkoech was wearing a school T-shirt belonging to the deceased when he was arrested, with Wangui’s name reportedly inscribed on it.
Investigators said the suspect was known to Wangui’s family and allegedly had a romantic relationship with the teenager.
Police further allege that messages were written on the walls of the house after the killing, with investigators considering relationship issues among the possible lines of inquiry.
The allegations have not been tested in court, and Kipkoech remains a suspect as investigations continue.
