Kenyans have been urged to prepare for El Niño rains expected to begin next week and continue for approximately three months.
Deputy Director of Weather Forecasting Charles Mugah has warned Kenyans against dismissing the possibility of the rains, saying forecasts indicate that the country is likely to experience heavy rainfall in the coming weeks.
Speaking before a Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts, Mugah said the rains are expected to begin next week and continue for three months.
“The rains are expected to begin next week and will continue for a period of three months,” Mugah said, urging Kenyans to take the necessary precautions and prepare adequately.”
He called on members of the public, particularly those living in flood-prone areas, to take early measures to minimise the potential impact of the rains.
Mugah appeared before the committee alongside Environment Ministry Principal Secretary Festus Ngeno.
Ngeno, however, faced tough questions after it emerged that the government had not paid traders who supplied goods and services during the African Science Summit held nearly two years ago.
Appearing before the committee chaired by Butere MP Tindi Mwale, Ngeno said he was seeking approval from the National Treasury to facilitate payment of the outstanding bills.
The revelations came as the committee continued examining the use of public funds and the implementation of government programmes.
