Two people, including a student, have been killed after they were reportedly run over by a truck at the Nakuru Railway Bridge in Nakuru County.

The victims are said to have just alighted from a matatu when the truck struck them, killing them in the incident that has raised concern among residents and motorists.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remain unclear as investigations continue to establish how the crash occurred.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by pedestrians around busy roads and public transport drop-off points, particularly in areas where passengers alight close to moving traffic.

Limited visibility, heavy traffic and unsafe stopping points can increase the risk of collisions, especially around bridges, junctions and other areas with high pedestrian activity.

Motorists have been urged to reduce speed when approaching such areas, maintain a safe following distance and remain alert for pedestrians who may unexpectedly enter the carriageway.

Matatu operators have also been advised to ensure passengers alight at safe and designated stopping points where possible, while passengers should exercise caution before stepping onto or crossing active traffic lanes.

Authorities are expected to assess the area and determine whether additional measures, including improved signage, lighting, barriers or safer passenger drop-off points, are needed to enhance pedestrian safety.
