Murang’a County has postponed its planned Mazingira Day tree-planting exercise following inadequate rainfall, raising concerns over the survival of thousands of seedlings intended for the environmental conservation campaign.
The county had planned to plant 250,000 tree seedlings within one hour as part of activities marking Mazingira Day, in an ambitious push to boost forest cover and promote environmental conservation.
However, the failure of the rains forced officials to postpone the exercise to a later date, as dry conditions could undermine the survival of newly planted trees.
The decision highlights the importance of adequate rainfall in supporting tree-growing initiatives, particularly as the country continues to pursue environmental restoration and climate change mitigation efforts.
Tree planting is a key component of Kenya’s efforts to increase forest cover, restore degraded landscapes and protect water catchment areas. However, the success of such campaigns depends not only on the number of seedlings planted but also on their survival and long-term care.
The planned exercise would have seen 250,000 seedlings planted in just 60 minutes, making it a major undertaking for the county’s environmental conservation programme.
