The Raila Odinga Memorial Anniversary Committee has unveiled a three-day programme to mark the first anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a press statement dated October 12, 2026, the committee announced that the commemorations will run from Tuesday, October 13, to Thursday, October 15, bringing together family members, political leaders, elders, youth, religious leaders and members of the public.
The activities will honour Raila’s legacy and his contribution to Kenya’s political and national development, while providing an opportunity for reflection on the values that defined his decades of public service.
Kisumu to Host Intergenerational Dialogue
The commemorations will begin on Tuesday, October 13, with an intergenerational conclave at Ofafa Memorial Hall in Kisumu.
The gathering will bring together members of the Luo Council of Elders, young people, women and religious leaders to reflect on Raila’s call for dialogue between generations in addressing social, political and economic challenges.
The programme will also feature poetry and musical performances by young people from the region, highlighting Raila’s struggles, aspirations and legacy. A blood donation exercise will be held alongside the event in recognition of his spirit of selflessness.
According to the committee, the conclave will also provide an opportunity to discuss the post-Raila transition, with emphasis on peace, dialogue, tolerance and public participation.
Global Candle-Lighting Ceremony Set for Wednesday
On Wednesday, October 14, Kenyans and Raila’s supporters across the world will be invited to participate in an international candle-lighting ceremony at Kang’o, led by Mama Ida Odinga.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m., with the committee calling on people to light candles in their homes, churches, mosques and diaspora gatherings as a symbol of remembrance and unity.
The initiative is intended to bring together admirers of the late statesman across geographical boundaries in a shared moment of reflection.
Bondo to Host Main Memorial Anniversary
The three-day programme will culminate on Thursday, October 15, with the main memorial anniversary at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.
The event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 a.m. and is expected to bring together family members, community representatives, political leaders, invited guests and members of the public.
Musicians from Kenya and beyond are expected to perform in honour of Raila, with the programme also providing an opportunity for attendees to reflect on his life, public service and enduring influence on the country.
Committee Appeals for Peaceful Commemorations
The committee, chaired by Professor Adams Oloo, has called on Kenyans, community organisations and media houses to participate in and cover the commemorations.
It has urged all participants to observe the programme with dignity, peace and respect as the country reflects on the life and legacy of the former Prime Minister.
The committee said the anniversary is not only a period of mourning but also an opportunity to celebrate Raila’s life, remember his contribution to Kenya and renew the values of unity and service to humanity.
The three-day programme is expected to draw participation from communities across the country and Kenyans living abroad.
