President William Ruto has highlighted his administration’s teacher recruitment efforts and urged residents of West Pokot County to register with the Social Health Authority (SHA) as he continued his development inspection tour in the region.
Speaking during an inspection of the Kapsait–Sondany Road project in Pokot South Constituency, Ruto said his government had employed more than 20,000 teachers, pointing to education as one of the key areas of his administration’s development agenda.
The President also encouraged residents to enrol in SHA, emphasising the importance of registering for the government’s health coverage programme.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who was also present, said peace had returned to parts of the Kerio Valley following persistent conflicts involving livestock theft among communities.
Murkomen’s remarks come amid longstanding security concerns in the region, where cattle rustling has contributed to inter-community tensions and insecurity.
Meanwhile, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi assured residents that the government was committed to extending electricity connections to all parts of the country, including remote rural areas.
The leaders accompanying the President included West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin, Pokot South MP David Pkosing, Sigor MP Peter Lochakapong and Woman Representative Rael Aleutum.
The leaders expressed support for Ruto’s bid for a second term, citing what they described as his development record and commitment to improving infrastructure and public services.
The visit forms part of the President’s ongoing inspection of development projects in West Pokot and Trans Nzoia counties, with infrastructure, healthcare, education, security and rural electrification featuring prominently in the government’s agenda.
