The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has summoned former Senator Hassan Omar to appear before its Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee on October 21, 2026, over remarks he allegedly made about voting by deceased voters.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, October 14, the commission said the summons relates to statements allegedly made by Omar during a public rally in Mombasa County on September 11, 2026.
The matter is being examined under the Electoral Code of Conduct contained in the Second Schedule of the Elections Act, 2011.
The IEBC said the summons gives the former senator an opportunity to respond to the allegations, emphasising that the committee will make its determination after considering the available evidence and representations presented before it.
The commission has urged Omar to honour the summons and cooperate with the proceedings, reaffirming its commitment to impartiality and fairness in handling complaints concerning electoral conduct.
With the 2027 General Election approaching, the electoral body has also called on political leaders, candidates and their supporters to exercise restraint in their public statements and conduct.
The IEBC said it remains committed to promoting a peaceful electoral environment anchored on tolerance, respect for the rule of law and democratic participation.
The commission added that it would issue further information on the matter after the conclusion of the proceedings.
