Security and infrastructure development have taken centre stage as the Mashujaa Day Thematic Week kicked off in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, ahead of the national celebrations scheduled for October 20, 2026.

Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr. Raymond Omollo said improved security was essential in attracting investment, boosting trade and supporting economic growth, particularly in areas previously affected by insecurity.

Speaking during the launch of the thematic week on Wednesday, October 14, Omollo pointed to improved security in the North Rift, noting that communities were gradually resuming normal activities, children were returning to school and markets were reopening.

He said sustained peace and stability would enable businesses to thrive while allowing infrastructure projects to deliver lasting benefits to local communities.

The PS also highlighted ongoing road infrastructure development in the Kerio Valley, including the Kilang’ata-Tot-Kopasi and Barpello-Tot-Sigor-Marich corridors, which are intended to improve connectivity and ease the movement of people and goods.

Omollo emphasised that infrastructure development must go hand in hand with security to ensure communities benefit from improved access to markets, essential services and economic opportunities.

The Principal Secretary called for continued strengthening of the National Police Service through recruitment, improved officers’ welfare, training and investment in modern equipment and technology.

During public engagements, residents raised concerns over insecurity in Langas Ward, Eldoret, including robberies, house break-ins and physical attacks.

Omollo urged police officers, local institutions, landlords and residents to work together to address the security challenges, stressing the importance of timely information sharing and community participation in crime prevention.

Discussions also focused on gender-based violence and femicide, with calls for accountability, timely investigations, effective handling of criminal cases and improved access to support services.

The Mashujaa Day Thematic Week is also highlighting the role of sports in national development, particularly in nurturing talent, creating employment and stimulating local economic activity.

Facilities such as Kipchoge Keino Stadium, Kapseret Stadium and Kamariny Stadium were cited as examples of the importance of sports infrastructure in creating opportunities for athletes and surrounding communities.

The activities form part of the preparations for the national Mashujaa Day celebrations, which will be held in Eldoret on October 20.

The celebrations are expected to showcase development initiatives, bring public services closer to citizens and recognise the contributions of individuals and communities to national progress.

Among those who attended the launch were Deputy Inspector-General of Police Eliud Lagat, Deputy Inspector-General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, National Celebrations Thematic Committee Chair Dennis Itumbi and Government Spokesperson Charles Owino.
