Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has urged young Kenyans to reject political agitation and support leaders who promote peace, responsible leadership and national stability.

Speaking during the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) graduation ceremony at State House, Nairobi, presided over by President William Ruto, Atwoli cautioned the youth against being influenced by politicians he accused of threatening the country’s peace.

“I would ask you kindly not to listen to people of our age who have harboured political age and who don’t want this country to be peaceful,” Atwoli said.

The COTU boss told the graduates that peace and responsible leadership were essential for the successful implementation of national programmes, noting that the prevailing stability had created an environment for important public events such as the graduation ceremony.

“What you are witnessing now, you can only witness it in a peaceful tranquillity, in a country that presses upon peace, in a country that has responsible leadership,” he stated.

Atwoli also urged young men and women to respect their leaders, parents and other individuals entrusted with positions of responsibility.

He emphasised that responsible leadership should be reflected not only in official positions but also in people’s words, actions and conduct within society.

The trade unionist challenged the youth to embrace values that strengthen social harmony and promote peaceful coexistence, warning against political rhetoric that could undermine national stability.

His remarks come as political activity gradually intensifies ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders increasingly engaging young people in discussions around governance, leadership and the country’s political future.

Atwoli’s message placed emphasis on peace, discipline and respect for leadership as key pillars for national development.
