Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has criticised the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) over the latest fuel price increases, accusing the regulator of engaging in prolonged consultations to justify higher pump prices.
In a strongly worded statement, Nyoro questioned the process behind the latest review, suggesting that the consultations were intended to provide justification for increasing fuel prices.
“EPRA and associates, as you pretend to consult till late to purport to increase fuel prices, know that Kenyans will not accept that nonsense,” Nyoro said.
His remarks come after EPRA announced a sharp increase in fuel prices, with Super Petrol rising by KSh 12.93 per litre, Diesel by KSh 9.90 and Kerosene by KSh 28.49.
The increases are likely to intensify public debate over the cost of living, given the central role fuel plays in transportation, food distribution and the cost of essential goods and services.
Higher diesel prices could raise operating costs for public transport operators, businesses and farmers, while the increase in petrol prices may place additional pressure on motorists and commuters.
The sharp rise in kerosene prices could also hit low-income households that rely on the fuel for cooking and lighting.
Nyoro’s criticism adds to the growing scrutiny of fuel pricing decisions and their impact on ordinary Kenyans, with calls for greater transparency and accountability in the determination of pump prices.
