The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has stepped up efforts to strengthen its partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in the fight against corruption and transnational economic crimes across Eastern Africa.

The renewed commitment followed a high-level bilateral meeting between EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud and UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma at the United Nations Office in Vienna on Friday, October 16, 2026.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation in law enforcement, advancing the use of forensic technology and improving mutual legal assistance among countries in Eastern Africa.

The two officials discussed strategies to address the cross-border nature of corruption and economic crime, with an emphasis on strengthening institutional capacity and protecting public resources.

During the engagement, Mohamud acknowledged UNODC’s continued support to the EACC through the Programme for Legal Empowerment and Aid Delivery in Kenya (PLEAD) and the UNODC Africa Hub, based in Nairobi.

He highlighted the importance of sustained technical cooperation and joint capacity-building initiatives in improving the commission’s ability to investigate and combat corruption.

Mohamud also briefed Juma on the establishment of the Africa Anti-Corruption Studies and Research Centre (CEREAC) in Nairobi, seeking UNODC’s support for the centre’s work in anti-corruption research, policy development and capacity building.

The proposed collaboration is expected to draw on UNODC’s international expertise and anti-corruption tools to strengthen national and regional efforts to tackle corruption and economic crimes.
