Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Renson Ingonga has led the prosecution team at the Mombasa High Court as Justice Diana Kavedza delivers judgment in the case against controversial preacher Paul Nthenge Mackenzie and 30 co-accused over the Shakahola tragedy.
The accused face charges relating to the deaths of 191 people, including 190 children and one adult, in the deaths linked to the Shakahola incident that shocked the country.
The court proceedings mark a critical stage in the high-profile case, which has drawn national attention over the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the alleged role of Mackenzie and his co-accused.
Ingonga’s presence at the court underscores the significance of the prosecution in seeking justice for the victims and their families.
The Shakahola tragedy emerged after the discovery of mass graves in Kilifi County, with investigations uncovering deaths linked to a religious group associated with Mackenzie.
The case has remained one of Kenya’s most closely watched criminal proceedings, raising serious questions about religious extremism, the protection of vulnerable people and the enforcement of laws governing religious organisations.
The judgment by Justice Kavedza is expected to be a key milestone in the legal proceedings against Mackenzie and the 30 co-accused.
