The son of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie has opened up about alleged childhood abuse, declaring that his father was rightly convicted amid the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the preacher’s activities and teachings.

In his account, Mackenzie’s son described his childhood experiences, bringing a personal dimension to the controversy surrounding the Good News International Church leader, who has faced serious legal proceedings linked to the Shakahola deaths.

His remarks are likely to renew public debate about the influence of religious leaders, the protection of children and the responsibility of authorities to intervene when religious teachings are alleged to put lives at risk.

Mackenzie became the focus of national and international attention following the discovery of mass graves in Shakahola Forest, Kilifi County, in 2023. Investigations linked the deaths to a religious movement whose followers were allegedly encouraged to fast to death in the belief that they would meet Jesus.

The Shakahola tragedy prompted a nationwide debate about religious extremism, the regulation of religious institutions and the role of government agencies in preventing abuse and protecting vulnerable people.

His son’s reported remarks add to the scrutiny of Mackenzie’s influence, with the account suggesting that concerns about his conduct extended beyond the allegations surrounding his followers.

The case has also intensified calls for stronger safeguards against the exploitation of vulnerable people under the guise of religious instruction.

Further details about the son’s specific allegations, including the nature of the alleged childhood abuse and the circumstances surrounding his statement, would be necessary to establish the full context of his account.
