The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has petitioned the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) to review the remuneration paid to teachers who serve as Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) invigilators, supervisors, centre managers and examiners.

According to KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori, in a petition dated September 24, 2026, the current rates are outdated and inadequate and have failed to keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living.

Misori said KCSE supervisors are currently paid KSh630 per day, while centre managers receive KSh500 and invigilators KSh430 per day.

For the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA), supervisors receive a flat-rate allowance of KSh4,080, centre managers KSh3,300 and invigilators KSh3,060.

For the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), supervisors receive KSh2,535, centre managers KSh1,615 and invigilators KSh1,665.

Misori said KNEC examiners are paid between KSh35 and KSh80 per script, depending on the subject, while teachers handling practicals, computer and agriculture projects receive no payment.

He argued that the rates do not reflect the skills, time, effort and risks involved in managing national examinations.

According to Misori, the low remuneration also affects teachers’ welfare and could undermine KNEC’s ability to attract and retain qualified examination personnel.

The KUPPET Secretary General further raised concerns over what he said was the absence of public participation before the rates were set or continued.

He said KUPPET, as the recognised bargaining agent for a significant number of affected personnel, had not been given an opportunity to make representations on the rates.

Misori has called on the SRC to undertake a comprehensive review of the remuneration rates and establish rates that are commensurate with current market rates and the prevailing cost of living.

He has also asked the Commission to convene a formal public participation forum involving KUPPET and other stakeholders before any determination is made or confirmed.

KUPPET says a comprehensive review of the remuneration of examiners within a collective bargaining framework would help address recurring challenges surrounding the management of national examinations and delays in settling examiners’ dues.
