Media personality Oga Obinna has sparked debate over the responsibilities of fathers towards their children and former partners, arguing that while a child remains a father’s responsibility, the child’s mother should not automatically be considered his responsibility.

Obinna’s remarks come after his baby mama, Mama Ella, claimed she was struggling, while also confirming that he has been supporting their child.

Speaking on the issue, Obinna maintained that financial responsibility should be directed towards the child rather than the mother, particularly when the two parents are no longer in a romantic relationship.

“Your baby mama is not your responsibility unless you are sleeping with her. I am sure people will take it negatively, but your baby mama is not your responsibility, but the child is your responsibility,” he said.

The media personality went on to question how money sent to a child’s mother is utilised, drawing a comparison with corruption in Kenya, where funds intended for public projects are allegedly diverted for personal use.

“So ukimtumia pesa na anatengeneza nayo nywele, vile tu corruption ya Kenya iko, pesa ya barabara inaenda kwa mfuko, the same thing with the child,” Obinna remarked.

His comments have reignited conversations about co-parenting, financial support and the distinction between providing for a child and financially supporting an ex-partner.

While Obinna maintains that a father’s primary obligation is to the child, the discussion raises questions about how separated parents should manage financial responsibilities and ensure that money intended for a child’s welfare is used appropriately.

The remarks have drawn attention to the challenges that can arise when parents disagree over financial support, particularly when one parent claims to be struggling despite receiving assistance from the other.
