An escaped prisoner has been sentenced to death after he was rearrested in Kawangware, Nairobi, nearly three years after breaking out of custody.

Alex Kibisu was handed the death sentence by Senior Principal Magistrate Zainab Abdul after he was found guilty of escaping from lawful custody while facing robbery with violence charges.

Kibisu was arrested in Riruta on Sunday, November 27, 2026, following a disagreement with a matatu conductor over fare.

He was taken to Riruta Police Station, where officers established that he was a wanted prisoner who had escaped from custody.

Kibisu fled from Kibera Law Courts in November 2023, an incident that resulted in the interdiction of six prison officers.

At the time of his escape, Kibisu was already serving a death sentence in a separate robbery case.

Following the latest ruling, he was transferred to Kamiti Maximum Prison under tight security.

Police maintained a heavy presence around the courtroom during the proceedings and escorted Kibisu during his transfer to the maximum-security facility.

He had been listed among wanted criminals following his escape from custody.
