Thousands of people have fled ongoing clashes in Ethiopia and crossed into Kenya’s border town of Moyale over the past week, triggering an urgent humanitarian response to support the new arrivals.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says many of those arriving are women and children in urgent need of food, clean water, shelter and other essential supplies.
In a statement, the UN refugee agency said it was working with humanitarian partners to provide assistance to the new arrivals while also supporting the host communities accommodating them.
“Many are women and children in urgent need of food, water, shelter and other essentials,” UNHCR said.
The influx comes amid continued insecurity in parts of Ethiopia, forcing families to leave their homes in search of safety across the border into Kenya.
The situation has heightened humanitarian concerns in Moyale, where the growing number of arrivals could place additional pressure on available resources and essential services.
UNHCR and its partners are coordinating support for the displaced families and host communities as efforts continue to address their immediate needs.
The agency’s response underscores the importance of providing protection and life-saving assistance to people fleeing violence, particularly vulnerable groups such as children and women.
