Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) has assured Kenyans of its preparedness to handle Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases amid ongoing efforts to strengthen the country’s emergency response capacity.
Speaking while hosting the Parliamentary Committee on Health, MTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr. Philip Kirwa said the facility has specialised healthcare facilities and equipment to respond to potential disease outbreaks.
Dr. Kirwa noted that the hospital had received specialised equipment from the national government, including personal protective equipment (PPE) to safeguard healthcare workers while attending to suspected cases.
The CEO further revealed that MTRH has so far handled 10 suspected Ebola patients, all of whom were discharged after testing negative for the disease.
He said the development demonstrates the hospital’s capacity to assess and manage suspected cases while maintaining safety standards for both patients and healthcare workers.
The assurance comes as Kenya continues to strengthen surveillance and preparedness measures against Ebola and other emerging infectious diseases.
MTRH’s preparedness efforts are aimed at ensuring suspected cases can be identified, isolated and assessed promptly to minimise the risk of possible transmission and protect public health.
The hospital’s engagement with the Parliamentary Committee on Health also provided an opportunity to highlight the facility’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies and the support it has received from the national government.
