FIFA and UEFA are embroiled in a dispute over documents linked to Gianni Infantino’s abandoned plan to establish a commercial subsidiary for major football tournaments.
FIFA has accused UEFA of spreading “misinformation” and attempting to use a Florida court case to obtain documents related to the proposal. It has also alleged that the dispute could be linked to efforts to influence next year’s FIFA presidential election.
The proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise would have allowed private investors to take stakes in the commercial venture. The plan was shelved after facing opposition, with FIFA denying claims that Infantino was seeking personal financial gain.
FIFA maintained that the proposal was aimed at generating additional revenue to support football development.
Infantino is expected to seek another term as FIFA president next March. He has pledged to increase financial distributions to FIFA’s 211 member associations from the organisation’s reserves.
His continued support includes backing from CAF and CONMEBOL, as well as Saudi Arabia.
