Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has presided over the inauguration of the new board of the National Cybersecurity Agency, in a move aimed at strengthening Kenya’s ability to combat growing cyber threats.

Speaking at Harambee House in Nairobi, Murkomen said the appointment marks an important milestone in safeguarding the country’s digital infrastructure amid increasing reliance on technology.

He noted that while digital transformation has expanded access to government services, improved efficiency and created economic opportunities, it has also exposed the country to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

“We must, therefore, do all we can to secure the digital foundations upon which our national transformation agenda rests,” Murkomen stated.

The CS said the new board, chaired by Martin Koyabe, will play a critical role in strengthening the country’s cybersecurity architecture and protecting national interests as well as constitutional rights.

Among its key responsibilities will be building the capacity of the National Cybersecurity Operations Centre to detect, analyse and coordinate responses to cyber threats in real time.

Murkomen further emphasised the importance of a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach in addressing cybersecurity challenges, noting that protecting the country’s digital space requires collective responsibility.

He pledged the government’s support to the board as it undertakes its mandate, wishing the members success in their new roles.
