The Inter-Religious Council of Kenya (IRCK) has called for a peaceful and transparent electoral process ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning against rising anxiety and the risk of violence.

Speaking during the council’s State of the Nation Address, Bishop Geoffrey Njunguna said the country was approaching the election period amid economic hardships and lingering memories of deaths linked to previous election-related violence and protests.

Njunguna urged Kenyans to reject attempts to mobilise them into violence, including being paid to disrupt public meetings and cause chaos.

He instead encouraged citizens to register as voters and participate in the electoral process.

The bishop also called on security agencies to remain neutral and protect all Kenyans with dignity, regardless of their political affiliations.

The council further expressed concern over recurring cases of femicide, calling for an end to the killings ahead of the 2027 elections.

Njunguna urged political leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric and focus on presenting policies and solutions to voters rather than promoting fear and division.

He also called on political actors to sign and honour peace commitments, adding that religious platforms would not be used for political campaigns.

On media freedom, the council appealed to the government and other stakeholders to protect journalists and media organisations as they cover the election period.

It also urged media outlets to uphold balanced reporting while prioritising the wellbeing of the country.

The IRCK further called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to provide regular updates on its state of preparedness for the elections.

The Judiciary was also urged to communicate promptly on its preparedness to handle matters relating to the electoral process.
