The Raila Amollo Odinga Memorial National Steering Committee has warned members of the public against individuals seeking to solicit funds in the name of the late former Prime Minister’s family or the memorial committee.
Committee chairperson Prof Adams Oloo said the committee had received reports of unscrupulous individuals attempting to take advantage of the anniversary period to raise money purportedly for memorial activities.
Oloo urged the public to remain vigilant and warned those involved to desist from the practice, saying the official committee had not authorised such fundraising activities.
The warning comes as preparations for the first anniversary commemorations of the late Raila Amollo Odinga get underway.
According to Oloo, the official programme has already commenced and will culminate in a major commemorative event at Migwena Cultural Sports Ground in Bondo Sub-County on October 15.
The celebrations will feature a range of activities aimed at reflecting on Raila Odinga’s contribution to Kenya’s national life and the impact he had on people across different sections of society.
The programme will include candle-lighting ceremonies, sporting activities and lecture sessions, among other events.
Oloo said the committee had invited Kenyans from across the country and people from all walks of life to participate in the commemorations, regardless of their diversity.
The events are expected to provide an opportunity for members of the public to remember and reflect on Raila’s life, public service and contribution to the country.
The committee’s warning comes amid heightened public interest in activities marking the anniversary, with the organisers urging Kenyans to rely on official communication regarding the commemorations and any related activities.
