Ethiopia has ordered the closure of its embassy in Eritrea and expelled 10 Eritrean diplomats, escalating tensions between the two neighbours amid renewed fighting in northern Ethiopia.

Eritrea responded by severing diplomatic ties with Ethiopia, accusing Addis Ababa of hostility and supporting Eritrean opposition groups.

Ethiopia has also accused Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt of backing an opposition alliance led by the TPLF, allegations the three countries deny.

The latest clashes are the most serious escalation since Ethiopia’s 2020 to 2022 civil war, in which Eritrean forces fought alongside Ethiopia’s federal troops.
