Simmering rifts among TSC commissioners on hiring of next CEO | Education News

Teachers across the country are set to benefit from a major promotion drive, with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) planning to promote 34,000 teachers by the end of November, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi has announced.

Speaking during a teachers’ event, Muturi praised teachers for their dedication to delivering the curriculum despite the challenges facing the education sector.

“Teachers have worked tirelessly and delivered the curriculum they were given,” Muturi said, highlighting the critical role teachers play in Kenya’s development.

He noted that virtually every profession in the country is built on the foundation provided by teachers, including political leadership.

“Any other profession passes through teachers. Even the politicians are the product of teachers,” he said.

Muturi also pointed to the progress made by the TSC in working with teachers’ unions, saying the commission had implemented a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) within the four-year period.

He further revealed that the commission had developed policies aimed at improving the welfare and professional growth of teachers.

Among the initiatives highlighted was the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme, which he said would allow teachers to undertake the programme without paying fees.

“We have developed policies. We have developed TPD where teachers will pay zero coin,” Muturi said.

The TSC chairperson also announced that the commission had reviewed the career progression structure for teachers, with principals expected to benefit from a responsibility allowance under the revised framework.

“We have reviewed our career progression. The principal will earn responsibility allowance,” he said.

Muturi also commended the leadership for supporting and attending teachers’ events, urging the partnership to continue.

“You have done us proud. You are the first President to come and be with us. My pleasure is tuendelee hivyo, coming to our function, tuendelee kabisa,” he said.

The planned promotion of 34,000 teachers is expected to provide career progression opportunities for educators while strengthening the workforce across Kenya’s schools.
