National Assembly Education Committee Chairperson Julius Melly has assured Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers that their concerns have been heard and will be presented to Parliament for consideration.

Speaking during an event celebrating teachers, Melly said Members of Parliament attended the function to appreciate the crucial role teachers play in shaping the country.

“As MPs, we came here to celebrate teachers. We came with appreciation,” Melly said.

He described teachers as among the most important workers in the country, noting that their influence extends beyond classrooms and into families and communities.

“One of the workers that this nation celebrates is the teacher. Mwalimu anakula hadi kijijini; he changes families,” he said.

Melly also praised teachers for continuing to serve in difficult and hardship areas, saying their contribution to the country’s development cannot be underestimated.

He further linked President William Ruto’s background as a teacher to his understanding of the education sector, urging teachers to recognise the changes being implemented under his administration.

“You are students of comparative studies. You know what our President has done in the education sector,” Melly said.

The Education Committee chairperson particularly addressed JSS teachers, assuring them that Parliament had taken note of the issues they raised.

“I want to tell JSS teachers, we heard you. Mliongea. Know that this is a listening government. Whatever you told us, we will present as it is, raw, to Parliament,” he said.

Melly said the government was moving with speed in implementing reforms, including efforts aimed at ensuring a 100 per cent transition in education.

“What this government has done in terms of 100 per cent transition, we are moving with speed and we will change this country,” he added.

His remarks come as teachers continue to push for better working conditions and the resolution of challenges affecting the implementation of Junior Secondary School education.
