Jubilee Party presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i has received the backing of KADU Asili as he begins a week-long tour of the Coast region ahead of the 2027 General Election.
KADU Asili Party Leader Mudzo Nzili endorsed Matiang’i’s presidential bid following a formal agreement between the two parties announced during a joint press conference on Monday.
Nzili said the party had chosen to support Matiang’i because of what he described as his ability to address the economic and social challenges facing the Coast region.
He also cited Matiang’i’s record while serving as Education Cabinet Secretary, saying the region continues to grapple with longstanding challenges in the education sector.
Nzili, who was serving as Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) chairperson during Matiang’i’s tenure at the Education Ministry, said the former CS had demonstrated the leadership needed to tackle the challenges affecting education at the Coast.
Jubilee Deputy Leader Beatrice Gambo, who comes from the Coast region, welcomed the agreement, saying the partnership could provide renewed hope for residents of the region.
Matiang’i said he was ready to work with KADU Asili and other Coast leaders and stakeholders as he seeks to build support for his presidential bid.
The Jubilee leader also criticised the handling of the Lamu Refinery project recently launched by President William Ruto, calling for details of the agreements and commitments surrounding the project to be tabled before Parliament for public scrutiny.
Matiang’i further reiterated his call for opposition parties to unite and form a broad political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
His tour will take him across all six Coast counties, where he is expected to meet residents, political leaders and other stakeholders to discuss his plans for the region and the country.
The Coast tour comes as political parties begin strengthening their regional networks and alliances ahead of the 2027 General Election.
