A new study by the Elimu Bora Working Group has raised concerns over the continued imposition of illegal levies in public schools, with 64% of day scholars reportedly being sent home for failing to make payments.
The study, which involved 388 respondents across 11 counties, found that many learners are being denied uninterrupted access to education despite government funding allocated to support their schooling.
According to the findings, 29.3% of learners have missed examinations after failing to pay fees demanded by schools. Parents have also reportedly faced threats and pressure when unable to meet the additional charges.
The study further identified school uniforms as a major financial burden for families, with some schools allegedly selling uniforms at prices significantly higher than their market cost.
Researchers found that a uniform costing about Sh15,000 from suppliers can be sold for as much as Sh60,000 by some schools, raising questions over pricing practices and the financial pressure placed on parents.
The findings have renewed calls for stronger enforcement of government policies on illegal school levies and greater accountability in the management of school finances.
Elimu Bora Working Group says the continued practice risks denying learners equal access to education, particularly those from financially disadvantaged families.
