Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has announced plans to increase the number of healthcare workers in the county following a sharp rise in the number of patients seeking treatment at public health facilities.
Governor Nassir said the number of patients being attended to in Mombasa’s hospitals has increased fourfold, with a significant number of those seeking treatment coming from other parts of the country.
The surge has placed additional pressure on healthcare workers and facilities, prompting the county government to explore short-term measures to boost staffing levels.
Nassir said the county plans to hire more healthcare workers on short-term contracts to help manage the increased workload and ensure patients receive timely medical attention.
«“The number of patients we are receiving in our hospitals has increased four times,” Nassir said, noting that some of the patients are travelling from other counties to seek healthcare services in Mombasa.»
The Governor said additional staff would help ease the pressure on existing healthcare workers, who are currently handling a growing number of patients.
The planned recruitment is also expected to improve the efficiency of service delivery across the county’s health facilities and reduce waiting times for patients.
Nassir said the county government remains committed to ensuring residents and other patients seeking treatment in Mombasa have access to quality healthcare services despite the growing demand.
The move comes as Mombasa continues to serve as a major healthcare hub for the Coast region, attracting patients from neighbouring counties and other parts of Kenya.
