The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has seized 529 electronic items valued at an estimated KSh13 million during an intelligence-led operation at a residential apartment in Kileleshwa, Nairobi.
The haul comprised 358 laptops, nine iPads and 162 electronic accessories, which KRA suspects were smuggled into the country without payment of the requisite taxes and duties.
The operation was conducted following intelligence indicating that the residential premises were being used to store electronic goods suspected to have entered Kenya illegally.
KRA said the seizure forms part of its ongoing efforts to combat smuggling and tax evasion, particularly involving high-value electronic goods.
The authority is expected to undertake further investigations to establish the source of the goods, their intended market and the individuals behind the suspected smuggling operation.
The seizure comes as KRA intensifies enforcement operations targeting illicit trade and attempts to evade customs duties, which the authority says undermine legitimate businesses and result in revenue losses to the government.
The electronic goods will remain in the custody of KRA pending investigations and further action in accordance with the law.
