A special Mass is underway at St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, Jomvu, Mombasa, to pray for 17 faithful who died in a road accident.

The Mass is being led by Archbishop Dominic Kimegich, assisted by other priests from the Catholic Diocese of Mombasa.

The 17 worshippers died in a road crash that occurred in Salama, Makueni County, on the night of October 2, 2026, while they were travelling to Subukia, Nakuru, for their annual prayer retreat.

All 17 people in the vehicle, including 16 passengers and the driver, died in the accident.

The special Mass has brought together worshippers, family members, relatives and friends to mourn the deceased and pray for them, as Church leaders continue to offer comfort to the bereaved families.

The tragedy has left a deep sense of loss within the St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church community, with mourners gathering to honour the lives of their fellow worshippers and seek strength and comfort for their families during this difficult period.
