A Form Three student at Chuka Girls High School in Tharaka Nithi County has died in an incident suspected to be suicide.
The 16-year-old student, identified as Cynthia Mwende, was reportedly found hanging inside a dormitory at the school on Wednesday evening.
Tharaka Nithi County Police Commander Zacheaus Ng’eno said the motive behind the suspected suicide remains unknown, as investigations into the incident continue.
According to police, Mwende’s body had no visible injuries or marks. It was subsequently moved to Chuka Level 5 Hospital as police commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Her parents arrived at the school shortly after the incident and were still engaging with the school management as authorities sought to establish what may have led to the student’s death.
Police Commander Ng’eno urged members of the public, particularly young people, to speak out about challenges they are facing and seek help rather than resorting to self-harm.
“People should share their challenges and speak up instead of taking their own lives,” Ng’eno said.
Efforts by journalists to obtain a comment from Chuka Girls High School Principal Mrs Harriet Kinyua were unsuccessful, as she declined to comment on the incident.
Police investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
