Atletico Madrid handed Manchester United a 2-0 defeat in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, with Pablo Barrios striking early before Jonathan David sealed the victory after the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

Atletico Madrid claimed a crucial victory over Manchester United at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, punishing defensive mistakes and taking advantage of a costly red card to secure all three points in the Champions League league phase.

The Spanish side got off to a flying start when Pablo Barrios opened the scoring inside the first minute, capitalising on a defensive lapse to give Diego Simeone’s men an immediate advantage.

United attempted to respond, with Bryan Mbeumo coming close to an equaliser after creating space for a left-footed effort that narrowly missed the target. Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes also featured in the visitors’ attacking efforts as Michael Carrick’s side searched for a way back into the contest.

Atletico, however, remained disciplined and dangerous, using their attacking quality to put the English side under sustained pressure.

The hosts thought they had doubled their lead through Johnny Cardoso, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a possible handball in the build-up, allowing Manchester United to remain within reach.

United’s hopes of salvaging a result suffered a major setback in the second half when defender Leny Yoro was sent off in the 73rd minute after a VAR review for denying a goalscoring opportunity.

With a numerical advantage, Atletico exploited the spaces left by the visitors, and substitute Jonathan David struck on the counterattack to make it 2-0 and put the contest beyond United’s reach.

Despite Carrick’s attempts to change the game through substitutions, Manchester United could not find a breakthrough as Atletico comfortably protected their advantage.

The defeat raises further questions about United’s defensive organisation and attacking efficiency, while Atletico will take confidence from a disciplined performance that delivered their first points of the league phase after an opening defeat to Liverpool.

Manchester United, who began their European campaign with a 4-0 victory over Sabah, will now look to recover when they face Como on October 21.

Atletico Madrid travel to face Stuttgart on the same date as both sides continue their campaigns in Europe’s premier club competition.
