Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has explained his absence from the event marking one year since the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, citing prior engagements in the United States.
In a statement shared on his official X account, Gachagua revealed that Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, had personally invited him to the memorial ceremony held in Bondo, Siaya County.
Gachagua thanked Ida for the invitation, saying his absence was due to commitments outside the country that had been scheduled earlier.
The Democracy for the Citizens (DCP) party leader also reaffirmed his admiration for Raila’s political legacy, particularly his efforts to build a strong political party and promote the election of capable lawmakers.
Gachagua recalled remarks he made about the late opposition leader during the launch of his bid for the African Union Commission chairmanship, maintaining that his comments were sincere.
He said Raila’s political journey offered lessons for leaders seeking to establish strong political movements capable of influencing national affairs.
The former Deputy President added that he hoped to draw inspiration from Raila’s approach as he works to strengthen DCP and position it as a formidable political force.
