The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued an agency notice to First Community Bank seeking to recover KSh 623.4 million in alleged outstanding tax liabilities from former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
The notice, dated October 12, 2026, identifies Sonko, whose full name is Mike Sonko Mbuvi Gidion Kioko, as the taxpayer whose outstanding individual income tax liabilities are being pursued.
According to the notice, the total amount stands at KSh 623,389,105, comprising KSh 308,916,928 in principal tax covering the period between January 2015 and December 2019.
The amount also includes KSh 15,756,912 in penalties and KSh 298,715,265 in accumulated interest.
Under Section 42 of the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, KRA may appoint a person or institution holding money on behalf of a taxpayer as an agent for purposes of recovering unpaid taxes.
The notice requires First Community Bank to recover and remit the specified amount from funds held on Sonko’s behalf, subject to the applicable legal requirements.
The law also provides that an appointed agent who fails to comply with a valid agency notice without reasonable cause may become personally liable for the amount that should have been remitted.
The notice forms part of KRA’s tax recovery process. However, the issuance of an agency notice does not, on its own, establish whether the taxpayer disputes the assessment or whether any legal challenge or payment arrangement is in place.
