Five suspects have been arrested in separate anti-narcotics operations across Busia, Homa Bay, Kitui, Murang’a and Wajir counties, with police recovering several consignments of suspected cannabis sativa.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the arrests followed intelligence-led operations targeting the suspected storage and transportation of illicit drugs.
In Busia, detectives from the National Anti-Narcotics Investigations Bureau (NANIB) intercepted Abubakar Omar Rajab at the main bus stage as he prepared to board a Nairobi-bound bus. A search of his black bag reportedly uncovered a large bale of suspected cannabis wrapped in yellow cello tape.
Rajab was arrested and taken to Busia Police Station for processing ahead of his expected arraignment.
In Homa Bay County, detectives raided a house in Rodi Township where they recovered 64 rolls of suspected cannabis. Elijah Ochieng Alfred was arrested during the operation and remained in custody pending arraignment, according to the police account.
In Kitui County, a multi-agency team conducting checks at a roadblock in Kivandini along the Thika–Garissa Highway intercepted a public service vehicle travelling from Nairobi towards Mwingi.
Officers searched the passengers and reportedly found 325 rolls of suspected cannabis in a packet concealed inside Nicholas Mathumbi Kitati’s jacket. He was arrested and escorted to Kanyonyoo Police Station.
In Murang’a County, officers from Kigumo Police Station acted on a tip-off and traced Evans Karanja Mwaura to Kangari Township. A search of his silver Toyota Fielder reportedly yielded 150 rolls of suspected cannabis and assorted rolling papers.
The recovered items were secured as exhibits, while the vehicle was detained as investigations continued.
In Wajir County, detectives arrested Abdnasir Jelle following an intelligence-led operation that resulted in the recovery of 10 bales of suspected cannabis. He was taken into custody for processing ahead of arraignment.
The DCI said the operations formed part of ongoing efforts to disrupt suspected narcotics supply networks and bring those linked to the illicit trade before the courts.
The five suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
