Five suspects have been arrested following a disturbance at the first-anniversary commemoration of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga at Migwena Cultural Grounds in Bondo, Siaya County.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the incident occurred during the memorial ceremony, where a section of the crowd reportedly became rowdy, prompting police officers to intervene and restore order.

The five suspects were identified as Daniel Odhiambo, Gabriel Aloo, Felix Ochieng, Jerry Okello and Edwin Matongo.

Police said officers arrested the suspects in connection with the disruption and recovered several items during the operation.

The recovered items included a machete, a sword and a knife, which were detained as exhibits as investigations continued.

The suspects were taken into custody for processing ahead of their expected arraignment in court, according to the DCI.

The arrests followed the October 15, 2026, memorial marking one year since Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025. The gathering brought together members of the Odinga family, political leaders and thousands of supporters to honour the former prime minister’s life and legacy.

The DCI said it would continue working with other security agencies to maintain order at public gatherings and ensure that suspected criminal conduct is addressed in accordance with the law.

The five suspects remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
