The United Democratic Movement (UDM) has endorsed President William Ruto’s bid for a second term in the 2027 General Election, as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the polls.
The party announced its decision following a joint meeting of its National Executive Committee and National Governing Council held in Machakos.
Reading the resolutions, UDM party leader and Mandera Senator Ali Ibrahim Roba said the party would mobilise support for Ruto’s re-election, citing continuity, stability and sustained development.
UDM also announced plans to expand its presence across all 47 counties through a nationwide membership recruitment drive targeting young people, women and marginalised groups.
The party said it would field candidates for elective positions at different levels, including governor, senator, Member of Parliament, woman representative and Member of County Assembly.
The planned expansion signals UDM’s intention to build a wider national presence beyond its existing regional support base.
The party further pledged to strengthen its participation in the broad-based political arrangement while maintaining its independent identity.
UDM’s endorsement comes as political parties and leaders continue to position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections, with coalition arrangements and possible alliances expected to shape the contest.
Deputy party leader Abdullah Bashir was also among the party officials listed at the meeting.
The party’s planned grassroots mobilisation and nationwide recruitment drive will be key to its efforts to expand its political reach ahead of the election.
