Businesses and local traders in Eldoret are hoping to cash in on increased customer traffic as the town hosts this year’s Mashujaa Day national celebrations, with hotels, restaurants, transport operators and small-scale traders among those positioned to benefit.

The national event, held on October 20, 2026, at Eldoret Sports Club, has drawn visitors, government officials and other dignitaries to Uasin Gishu County, creating opportunities for businesses to increase sales and attract new customers.

For traders, the celebrations offer more than a national holiday. The influx of visitors is expected to stimulate demand for accommodation, food, transport, retail goods and other services, providing a boost to businesses operating within Eldoret and its surrounding areas.

Hotels and restaurants are among the enterprises that could benefit from increased demand as visitors seek accommodation and meals during their stay. Food vendors, market traders and small-scale entrepreneurs also have an opportunity to sell more products to residents and visitors attending the celebrations.

Transport operators, including taxi drivers, motorcycle riders and public service vehicle operators, could also experience increased business as people move between accommodation facilities, shopping areas and the event venue.

Small businesses selling clothing, locally made products, souvenirs and other merchandise may benefit from the heightened activity, while service providers such as event suppliers and photographers could secure additional customers.

Beyond the immediate sales, the national celebration offers Eldoret an opportunity to showcase its commercial potential and hospitality industry to visitors from across the country.

The event could also strengthen the town’s profile as a destination for conferences, tourism and other major national gatherings, potentially opening doors to future business opportunities.

However, the extent of the economic benefits will depend on how much visitors spend locally and whether the increased demand translates into higher earnings for small businesses. Rising operating costs, traffic congestion and competition among traders could also affect the gains.

For local entrepreneurs, the challenge will be to turn the temporary increase in visitors into lasting customer relationships and sustained business growth beyond the celebrations.

As Kenya marks Mashujaa Day, Eldoret’s hosting role presents an opportunity to celebrate not only the country’s heroes but also the resilience and enterprise of the local business community.

The big question remains: Will the Mashujaa Day celebrations deliver a lasting economic boost to Eldoret’s traders, or will the business boom fade once the visitors leave?
