Westlands Member of Parliament Tim Wanyonyi has defended Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions, arguing that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga prepared him for leadership beyond the political heights he personally attained.
Wanyonyi said Sifuna has the potential to ascend to Kenya’s highest political office, despite Raila’s unsuccessful attempts to become President.
“Raila prepared Sifuna for what he himself never became. Sifuna could now become the President of Kenya, a position Raila Odinga never attained,” Wanyonyi said.
The remarks highlight the possibility of a new political chapter within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), where Sifuna, the party’s Secretary-General, has emerged as a prominent voice in national political debates.
Raila, who served as Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013, remained one of Kenya’s most influential opposition leaders and contested the presidency multiple times without winning the seat.
Wanyonyi’s remarks suggest that the political experience and mentorship Sifuna gained under Raila could provide a foundation for a future presidential bid.
However, Sifuna’s potential journey to State House would depend on his political strategy, support within ODM and the broader national political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The endorsement also adds to discussions about the future of ODM and the emergence of a new generation of leaders following Raila’s long-standing influence on Kenyan politics.
