Principal Secretary Kello Harsama has called for urgent humanitarian assistance for thousands of people displaced by ethnic conflict in southern Ethiopia, warning that the crisis is spilling into Kenya.
In a social media post, Harsama appealed to individuals and well-wishers to support affected families with essential supplies, including food, clean water and clothing, as displacement continues to raise humanitarian concerns.
“My attention is drawn to a case of ethnic conflict in Southern Ethiopia which is spilling to Kenya and causing a humanitarian crisis,” Harsama stated.
The PS urged Kenyans and other well-wishers to come forward and assist thousands of displaced people who are in need of basic necessities.
Harsama also cautioned political leaders against making statements that could inflame tensions and fuel further violence among communities affected by the conflict.
“Politicians must stop inciting people to more violence,” he said.
He maintained that Ethiopia has the capacity to address the conflict, urging stakeholders to allow the country’s federal authorities to take the lead in finding an amicable solution.
“Ethiopia has full capacity to handle the conflict. Let’s leave the matter to federal authorities to resolve amicably,” Harsama added.
The PS further called on leaders in northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia to promote peaceful coexistence, unity and harmony among communities on both sides of the border.
“Meanwhile let leaders preach peace and harmony among all communities in Northern Kenya and Southern Ethiopia,” he urged.
Harsama’s appeal comes amid concerns over the humanitarian consequences of cross-border ethnic tensions, with displaced families requiring urgent support and efforts to prevent further violence.
