Twelve drivers have been arrested and their vehicles impounded in Meru County following a night-time interagency road safety compliance operation targeting motorists violating traffic regulations.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), eight of the 12 drivers arrested were found driving under the influence of alcohol, while another driver refused to provide a breath specimen for testing.

The operation exposed alarming levels of alcohol consumption among some motorists, with breath alcohol content (BrAC) readings reaching as high as 1.483 mg/l, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 0.35 mg/l.Other motorists recorded readings of 1.295 mg/l, 1.189 mg/l, 1.149 mg/l and 0.780 mg/l, all above the permitted threshold.

NTSA warned that driving under the influence of alcohol poses a serious danger to motorists, passengers and other road users, noting that excessive alcohol consumption impairs judgment and increases the risk of fatal road crashes.

The authority reiterated the need for motorists to observe traffic regulations and avoid driving after consuming alcohol.

The arrests come amid continued road safety enforcement efforts aimed at reducing accidents and promoting responsible driving across the country.
