Nigeria has identified two suspected cases of Ebola disease in its North-East region, prompting health authorities to initiate isolation and contact-tracing measures as laboratory tests are conducted to establish whether the individuals are infected.
The two individuals have already been isolated, while health officials are undertaking contact identification and listing to establish people who may have been exposed to the suspected cases.
Authorities have, however, cautioned the public against treating the reports as confirmed infections, noting that the two cases remain under investigation pending laboratory results.
In a public health advisory, residents were urged to maintain high standards of personal hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and adhere to guidelines issued by public health authorities to minimise the risk of possible transmission.
Further updates are expected as verified information becomes available.
The development comes amid heightened regional attention on Ebola preparedness and surveillance, with health authorities expected to closely monitor suspected cases and strengthen response measures.
