The Institute for Social Accountability (TISA) has challenged Parliament to strengthen its oversight of public borrowing and ensure borrowed funds are properly utilised.
TISA Head of Programmes Alexander Riithi said Parliament had failed to translate audit findings into meaningful accountability and corrective action against public officials implicated in the misuse of public resources.
Riithi said reports from the Auditor-General and the Controller of Budget should serve as the starting point for investigations and accountability rather than simply being presented and discussed without follow-up action.
He urged Members of Parliament to take a more active role in scrutinising government borrowing, including demanding clear explanations on how borrowed funds are spent.
The organisation called on lawmakers to ensure public debt is matched by transparent expenditure and measurable results for Kenyans.
Riithi said stronger parliamentary oversight would help address concerns over the management of public resources and restore accountability in government spending.
