Kenya’s food processing industry is strengthening food fortification standards in an effort to improve product quality and promote better nutrition among consumers.
The 2026 Kenya Millers Fortification Index has expanded to cover 32 companies and 144 brands, up from five companies in 2022.
The index covers maize flour, wheat flour and edible oils, with participating processors assessed on their compliance with nutrition and food safety standards.
Cereal Millers Association Chief Executive Officer Paloma Fernandes said increased industry ownership of food fortification would help strengthen quality standards and build consumer confidence.
The initiative uses operational assessments and laboratory testing to monitor the extent to which processors meet the required fortification standards.
The expansion reflects growing participation by food manufacturers in efforts to improve the nutritional quality of commonly consumed products.
Food fortification involves adding essential vitamins and minerals to food products to help address nutrient deficiencies among populations.
