A nearly two-year wait for justice has ended for Afline Anyango after a Rongo court sentenced the woman convicted of attacking her with a corrosive substance to 25 years in prison.

Margaret Atieno was handed the sentence after being found guilty of attempted murder and causing grievous harm to Anyango in an incident that occurred in Saria area, Awendo Sub-County, Migori County, in November 2024.

Anyango welcomed the judgment, saying she had waited for justice since the day she was attacked.

The case had remained before the courts as the prosecution presented evidence linking Atieno to the offences. Testimony from Anyango and other witnesses formed part of the evidence considered by the court.

Rongo Law Courts Principal Magistrate Chrisphine Oruo said the prosecution had presented sufficient evidence connecting Atieno to the charges.

The court heard that Anyango was attacked with a corrosive substance suspected to be acid.

Rather than focusing on the details of her injuries, Anyango’s account of the aftermath has been central to a case that has taken nearly two years to reach a verdict.

The sentence was issued under Sections 220 and 234 of the Penal Code, which cover attempted murder and causing grievous harm.

For Anyango, the ruling marked a significant moment after months of waiting for the case to be resolved.

However, the case may not be over. Atieno has 14 days within which to appeal the judgment.

The appeal period gives the accused an opportunity to challenge the conviction or sentence in a higher court, as provided for under Kenyan law.
