A murder suspect accused of killing a woman over an alleged Ksh.700 debt was lynched by an angry mob in Uriri, Migori County, on Wednesday evening.
The suspect, identified as Oburu Onyango, was attacked and killed at Uriri Trading Market by members of the public who had reportedly been pursuing him.
Uriri Sub-county Police Commander Ali Bashir confirmed the incident, saying officers rushed to the scene but could not rescue Onyango from the mob.
Bashir said the woman had left home earlier in the day to demand the money from Onyango but failed to return.
Her husband, Kennedy Onyango, later reported her missing after returning from Awendo town, where he had gone to buy some items.
A search involving family members and members of the public led to the discovery of the woman’s body in a sugarcane plantation, a few metres from Onyango’s home.
Police are investigating the woman’s death and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s lynching.
