Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a record-breaking 23-year career with the Portuguese national team.

The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a video shared on Instagram, in which he addressed supporters and reflected on his journey representing Portugal.

“The day has come for me to hand back the number 7 shirt of our national team,” Ronaldo said, referring to the iconic jersey he has worn throughout much of his international career.

He added that wearing the shirt had been both a privilege and a responsibility for more than two decades.

Ronaldo retires as Portugal’s most-capped player, having made 234 appearances and scored a record 146 international goals. No male footballer has made more appearances or scored more goals for a national team.

His greatest achievement with Portugal came in 2016 when he helped the country win its first UEFA European Championship title. He also played a key role in Portugal’s UEFA Nations League victories in 2019 and 2025.

His international career, however, had faced growing scrutiny in recent years as questions emerged over his performances and continued role in the national team amid his advancing age.

According to reports, tensions also emerged between Ronaldo and Portugal’s coaching setup following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the forward reportedly involved in disagreements with head coach Jorge Jesus.

His retirement announcement comes shortly after Argentine rival Lionel Messi also indicated that he was approaching the end of his international career.

Despite stepping away from international football, Ronaldo has no immediate plans to retire from the sport altogether. He remains contracted to Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he is pursuing the milestone of 1,000 career goals.

He currently stands at 985 goals, according to the CNN report.

In his farewell message, Ronaldo said his connection to Portugal would remain permanent, thanking supporters for sharing in the memorable moments of his international career.

“If I ever made you happy, if one of my goals ever made you hug someone, forget a worry or feel proud of our country, then it was all worth it,” he said.
