American rapper Nicki Minaj has become the subject of online ridicule after a video showing her making a surprise appearance at a polling station in New Hampshire went viral, with viewers questioning her visit following Democratic victories in the US midterm elections.
Minaj was spotted on Tuesday, November 3, outside Pinkerton Academy in Derry, New Hampshire, where she arrived as Americans headed to the polls to elect political representatives.
The rapper, who has openly expressed support for President Donald Trump and Republican candidates, was seen posing for photographs with voters before being escorted by police back to her tour bus.
However, footage of the brief appearance attracted a different kind of attention online after people waiting in the voting queue appeared to laugh as Minaj posed for cameras.
In the circulating clip, the rapper is seen interacting with people before moving towards a group of women for photographs. Some viewers interpreted her expressions and brief interaction as signs that she appeared uncomfortable, while others questioned why she had made the trip to New Hampshire.
The appearance also raised questions because Minaj is not a US citizen and is therefore not eligible to vote in federal elections.
Her visit came days after she appeared alongside Trump at a campaign rally in Michigan, where she voiced support for Republican candidates and encouraged people to vote.
The online mockery intensified after Democrats secured victories in key races, including New Hampshire’s Senate contest, where Democrat Chris Pappas defeated Republican John E. Sununu.
In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed also defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the Senate race, giving critics fresh ammunition to poke fun at Minaj’s public support for the Republican candidates.
Social media users questioned the rapper’s decision to appear at the polling station, with some describing the timing of her visit as embarrassing given the election results.
Others focused on the footage of voters laughing, although it remains unclear what prompted their reaction or whether it was directed at the rapper.
Despite the online backlash, Minaj has not publicly addressed the viral polling station video.
Her political involvement has increasingly placed her at the centre of public debate, particularly following her vocal support for Trump and conservative political causes.
