Quarry workers in Kirinyaga County are living with growing fears over their safety as the expected El Niño rains approach, with heavy rainfall likely to increase the risks associated with working in open quarries.

The concerns follow the death of 48-year-old Harrison Mwangi, who was buried alive at Kwa V Quarry in Mutithi Ward, Mwea.

For residents who depend on quarrying for their livelihoods, the incident has renewed concerns over the safety of the work, even as many continue to rely on the quarries to support their families.

Mwangi’s relatives described him as the family’s breadwinner. His brother, Josphat Kariuki, said Mwangi woke up early on the day of the incident and headed to the quarry with a friend before tragedy struck.

Meanwhile, Mwea West Sub-County Police Commander Millicent Ngugi has confirmed the incident, saying investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding Mwangi’s death.
